11 Here is a trustworthy saying:
If we died with him,
we will also live with him;
12 if we endure,
we will also reign with him.
If we disown (Deny) him,
he will also disown (Deny) us;
13 if we are faithless,
HE REMAINS FAITHFUL,
for he cannot disown himself. 2 Timothy 2
Paul continues to urge Timothy with True or Trustworthy sayings about the Lord, which are preceded by the little word, ‘IF’, signifying that they’re conditional. All except the last one regarding Christ’s Faithfulness, because He cannot Deny Himself in us.
Once more Paul exhorts Timothy to keep reminding the believers of these truths. It’s the Word that’s IN US that will make the difference in our lives!
14 KEEP REMINDING GOD’S PEOPLE OF THESE THINGS. WARN THEM before God against quarreling about words; it is of no value, and only ruins those who listen.
Paul continues to urge Timothy to keep his own life in order, in order to help those entrusted to his care. Timothy has a dual role, to care for God’s people, but he is still responsible for his own walk before the Lord.
15 DO YOUR BEST to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.
It’s dangerous to compete with others in the Christian life, competition is unhealthy in the Body of Christ, but we can and should try to be the best for the Lord that we can be.
16 AVOID GODLESS CHATTER, because those who indulge in it will become more and more ungodly. 2 Timothy 2
Paul speaks often in the short epistles to Timothy and Titus about the DANGER of wrong speaking, so it must have been something the Spirit wanted him to highlight to leaders and people alike.
20 Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. TURN AWAY FROM GODLESS CHATTER and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, 21 which some have professed and in so doing have departed from the faith. 1 Timothy 6
9 But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless. 10 WARN A DIVISIVE PERSON ONCE, AND THEN WARN THEM A SECOND TIME. AFTER THAT, HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THEM. Titus 3
Paul urged Timothy to protect the unity of the Church at all costs and if people wouldn’t listen they were to be removed. Arguing and division is not from the one Spirit, it’s most likely from the flesh/old nature, or the devil. Paul admonishes his Spiritual Son to keep it out of the Church.
DON’T INDULGE IN GODLESS CHATTER, IT WILL DRAW US AWAY FROM GOD.
