The last chapters of Jacob’s life were important and they were about not about him, but the next generation! The last chapters were about his authority before God, no longer physical strength.
The Lord kept the best wine until the last, contrary to the ways of this world. John 2:10
3 Jacob said to Joseph, “God Almighty appeared to me at Luz in the land of Canaan, and there he blessed me 4 and said to me, ‘I am going to make you fruitful and increase your numbers. I will … give this land as an everlasting possession to your descendants after you.’ Genesis 48
We looked at this yesterday, but Jacob began the meeting with Joseph and his two young sons by recounting his experience with God at Luz, present day Bethel. God promised Jacob that He was going to ‘make him fruitful and increase in numbers’ and Jacob then spoke that same blessing over both boys. God puts things in us and life teaches us lessons that we can pass on to the next generation if we’re willing. Kjell, the Swedish man with whom I travelled to the nations, was blessed as an infant by Smith Wigglesworth in his parent’s home.
15 Then he blessed Joseph and said,
“May the God before whom my fathers
Abraham and Isaac walked faithfully,
the God who has been my shepherd
all my life to this day,
16 the Angel who has delivered me from all harm
—may he bless these boys.
MAY THEY BE CALLED BY MY NAME
AND THE NAMES OF MY FATHERS ABRAHAM AND ISAAC,
AND MAY THEY INCREASE GREATLY
ON THE EARTH.”
Jacob was drawing Ephraim and Manasseh into the Covenant God had made with Abraham and renewed with his father Isaac, when he said they would both be reckoned as his sons. They would inherit in the same way, ‘just as Reuben and Simeon’, the two eldest sons by Leah. Genesis 48:5 This understanding of Covenant also carries through into the New Testament;
14 For the UNBELIEVING HUSBAND HAS BEEN SANCTIFIED THROUGH HIS WIFE, and the unbelieving wife has been sanctified through her believing husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, BUT AS IT IS, THEY ARE HOLY. 1 Corinthians 7
Just the presence of a believer in a marriage and a family makes a big difference before heaven. Hallelujah
God, through Jacob, reversed the measure of blessing on Ephraim and Manasseh, the younger received the greater blessing. A repeat of Jacob’s own life when he stole his brother Esau’s blessing. Believers have authority before God, to break off evil covenants or recurring problems, especially within the family. Declare and Decree blessing in place of cursing.
The last chapters of Jacob’s life were important because of the words he spoke before God over his descendants. His words carried power to shape and create their future and we have a better Covenant in Christ.
24 “‘“The Lord bless you
and keep you;
25 the Lord make his face shine on you
and be gracious to you;
26 the Lord turn his face toward you
and give you peace.”’
27 “So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them.” Numbers 6
