40 WHEN THE SUN WAS SETTING, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and … He healed them. Luke 4

When the sun was setting the power of God was manifested to everyone who came to Jesus in need.

Jesus had left the synagogue in Capernaum and ‘went to Peter’s home where his mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever’. Peter was married and the account of Jesus healing his mother-in-law is recorded the first three Gospels.

39 So he bent over her and REBUKED THE FEVER, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them. Luke 4

Jesus didn’t pray for her, He came close and rebuked the fever and it left her. The fever submitted to the presence of the authority of God and she was immediately healed and able to serve those in the house.

Then at sunset, no street lights then, the people brought all who were sick and Jesus, ‘laid hands on each one and healed them’. He ministered personally to each sick person and healed them.

41 Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, ‘You are the Son of God!’ But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew he was the Messiah.

The demons knew who Jesus was and shouted out His true identity, ‘You are the Son of God!’, but they had to bow to His authority. Opposing spirits had to give way to the Lord, yet many arrogant and foolish people today won’t acknowledge the truth.

42 At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them. 43 But he said, ‘I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.’

Jesus never stopped spreading the ‘Good News of the Kingdom of God’. The people of that area valued what He’d done for them, but the Gospel is for everyone. Jesus kept going forward, bringing the Good News of the Kingdom throughout Israel.

I was drawn to this short scripture passage today because of the little phrase, ‘When the sun was setting!’ It was at the end of the day that people began to witness the power of God. There was a certain time, after the preaching in the synagogue, that the Kingdom was demonstrated. I believe that as the sun sets on our own age that the Kingdom will once again be manifest in power and it will be for everyone.

God bless and keep you today. Immanuel
