Christ be with me, Christ within me,
Christ behind me, Christ before me,
Christ beside me, Christ to win me,
Christ to comfort and restore me,
Christ beneath me, Christ above me,
Christ in quiet, Christ in danger,
Christ in hearts of all that love me,
CHRIST IN MOUTH OF FRIEND AND STRANGER.
From Saint Patrick’s Breastplate, 6th century.
We’ve been speaking of Joseph in Genesis 39, still serving time in the prison. As we step into Genesis 40 we read about two servants of Pharaoh who made his acquaintance in the prison, after displeasing their master.
4 The captain of the guard assigned them to Joseph, (God’s handiwork in this) and he attended them. Genesis 40
So Joseph made a ‘Connection’ with these two officials of Pharaoh; God brought them to him right there in prison. They were there because they’d upset Pharaoh, but they were also there to meet Joseph and learn of his skill in interpreting dreams.
8 ‘We both had dreams,’ they answered, ‘but there is no one to interpret them.’
Then Joseph said to them, ‘Do not interpretations belong to God? Tell me your dreams.’
Three days later both were gone, the cupbearer reinstated and the baker executed. That was all the time God needed to make the introduction between Joseph and a serving official of the king.
14 But when all goes well with you, REMEMBERER ME AND SHOW ME KINDNESS; MENTION ME TO PHARAOH AND GET ME OUT OF THIS PRISON. 15 I was forcibly carried off from the land of the Hebrews, and even here I have done nothing to deserve being put in a dungeon.’
23 The chief cupbearer, however, did not remember Joseph; he forgot him. Genesis 40
Joseph had the right idea about someone speaking a word in the king’s ear for him, but it wasn’t God’s time just yet. He had to serve a bit longer until God’s time was right, a Kairos moment (Greek word for the right or perfect time)
God sent someone into Joseph’s life, a divine introduction. He still does these things today and Joseph may have sensed in some way that this man could help him, but nothing happened. He must have been disappointed, however God had not finished. Pharaoh would have his dreams and then Joseph would be called for.
Some of us may be about to meet or have already met someone whom God has brought into our lives. Nothing may have happened yet, but God’s plans always bear fruit.
I started today with part of the Prayer of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland.
‘CHRIST IN MOUTH OF FRIEND AND STRANGER.‘
Look for Christ in the mouths of those God brings into your life.
