True friendships are a source of God’s Favour and Protection.
Saul remained king after the Lord told him through the prophet Samuel that his kingdom ‘had been torn from him’ 1 Samuel 15:28 During that time Saul did everything in his power to oppose God’s will for David to succeed him as king. He sought to kill David many times, but the Lord used the friendship between David and Jonathan, Saul’s son to rescue David.
3 But David took AN OATH and said, ‘Your father knows very well that I HAVE FOUND FAVOUR IN YOUR EYES, and he has said to himself, “Jonathan must not know this or he will be grieved.” Yet as surely as the Lord lives and as you live, there is ONLY A STEP BETWEEN ME AND DEATH (David knew death was that close to him).’ 1 Samuel 20
Jonathan agreed to help David and act as an intermediary between him and his father, King Saul. Sometimes good friends can sound out other people’s views without causing offence and bring about reconciliation. Jonathan agreed to talk with his father as David had asked.
Jonathan also swore AN OATH to David that he would ‘sound out his father within two days’ and report back to him.
13 But if my father intends to harm you, may the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if I do not let you know and send you away in peace. MAY THE LORD BE WITH YOU AS HE HAS BEEN WITH MY MY FATHER (Saul was even now a Has-Been).
30 Saul’s anger flared up at Jonathan … 31 As long as the son of Jesse lives on this earth, neither you nor your kingdom will be established. Now send someone to bring him to me, for he must die!’
32 ‘Why should he be put to death? What has he done?’ Jonathan asked his father. 33 But Saul hurled his spear at him to kill him. Then Jonathan knew that his father intended to kill David.
Jonathan confirmed what David had known all along and told David of his father’s intentions.
42 Jonathan said to David, ‘Go in peace, for we have sworn friendship with each other in the name of the Lord, saying, “The Lord is witness between you and me, and between your descendants and my descendants for ever.”’ Then David left, and Jonathan went back to the town.
Their friendship to last to the next generations and when David was King he sought out Mephibosheth, to bless Jonathan’s son.
