Going the extra mile settled Rebekah’s destiny.
12 Then he prayed, ‘Lord, God of my master Abraham, make me successful today, and show kindness to my master Abraham. … 14 May it be that when I say to a young woman, “Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,” and she says, “Drink, and I’ll water your camels too”– let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.’
15 BEFORE HE HAD FINISHED PRAYING, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. Genesis 24
‘A Suddenly’ of God, immediate answer to the servant’s prayer (in his heart V45, not even spoken out). When we are moving in line with God’s will, events can progress very quickly. Rebekah was attending to her evening duties, collecting water from the well and suddenly a stranger asked for help. She not only obliged the man, but gave him more than he’d asked of her. God is ‘the God who sees’, El Roi (Hagar, alone with her son in the desert Genesis 16:14). He sees what’s done to help others and the rewards can be out of all proportion to what we ask or imagine. Ephesians 3:20 God’s blessings are coming to some today, because we’ve been faithful to Him and helped others.
32 So the man went to the house, and the camels were unloaded. Straw and fodder were brought for the camels, and water for him and his men to wash their feet. 33 Then food was set before him, but he said, ‘I WILL NOT EAT UNTIL I HAVE TOLD YOU WHAT I HAVE TO SAY.’ Genesis 24
The servant COUNTED HIS MISSION AS BOTH URGENT AND IMPORTANT and he wouldn’t eat until he’d told the family. They agreed to allow Rebekah to return with him to become Isaac’s wife.
55 But her brother and her mother replied, ‘Let the young woman remain with us ten days or so; then you may go.’
56 But he said to them, ‘DO NOT DETAIN ME, now that the Lord has granted success to my journey. Send me on my way so I may go to my master.’
Others May try to detain us from the things of God, but the chief servant (a type of the Holy Spirit) wouldn’t be delayed. God’s calling on our lives should be our priority, the most important thing to us.
Rebekah was willing to go at once with the man and enter God’s destiny for her life. She became a mother of God’s people Israel.
