MAXIMUM QUANTITY, BEST QUALITY – the wine at the wedding feast at Cana in Galilee. John 2

MAXIMUM QUANTITY, BEST QUALITY – the wine at the wedding feast at Cana in Galilee. (Only in John’s Gospel)

The Lord, despite initial reluctance to be involved, rescued the wedding hosts with the very best and plenty of it!

JESUS SAID TO THE SERVANTS, ‘FILL THE JARS WITH WATER’; SO ‘THEY FILLED THEM’ TO THE BRIM. John 2

Jesus didn’t say that’s too much, hold on there, those are large vessels, so ‘THEY’ filled the jars TO THE BRIM (Very Top, Most they could get in). How many of us come to God with a small measure, something like a tea spoon? The Lord wasn’t taken aback by the volume of these six stone jars. GOOD WINE is usually served in smaller quantities but this was served in ABUNDANCE. THE HOST’S LACK was more than compensated for by the Lord’s generosity. ABUNDANCE is a good word to keep in mind when we approach the Throne of God’s Grace. (Grace, that which we haven’t earned)

Then he told them, ‘Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.’

They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine.

It wasn’t just the Quantity of the wine, it was the QUALITY. I’m sure that was the BEST WINE that Master of Banquets had ever tasted and also the guests.

Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, ‘Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; BUT YOU HAVE SAVED THE BEST TILL NOW.’

The world often disappoints, promising much and giving little and of poor quality. The Lord changed what the Master and probably the people expected, THE BEST HAD BEEN KEPT TILL THE LAST, a word of Encouragement for mature believers. Have you asked the Lord what He’s kept by for you? Cheap wine gives headaches and so does much that the world promises, but ‘the blessing of the Lord brings wealth and He adds no sorrow to it’. Proverbs 10:22

Finally, in keeping with the words of the Master of the Banquet so long ago, we read in Revelation 19:9

Hallelujah!
For our Lord God Almighty reigns.
Let us rejoice and be glad
    and give him glory!
For the WEDDING OF THE LAMB HAS COME,
AND HIS BRIDE HAS MADE HERSELF READY.
Fine linen, bright and clean,
    was given her to wear.’

(Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of God’s holy people.)

Then the angel said to me, ‘Write this: BLESSED ARE THOSE WHO ARE INVITED TO WEDDING SUPPER OF THE LAMB!’ And he added, ‘These are the true words of God.’ Revelation 19

The Lord who suffered so much on the cross will have His reward, a huge celebration in the form of a wedding feast. A reminder perhaps of His first miracle at Cana in Galilee.

God bless and keep you today.
