2 He made my mouth like a sharpened sword,
in the SHADOW OF HIS HAND HE HID ME; he made me into a polished arrow
and concealed me in his quiver.
3 He said to me, ‘You are my servant,
Israel, IN WHOM I WILL DISPLAY MY SPLENDOUR.’ Isaiah 49
I have put my words in your mouth and covered you with the SHADOW OF MY HAND – I who set the heavens in place, who laid the foundations of the earth, and who say to Zion, “YOU ARE MY PEOPLE.” Isaiah 51:16
Isaiah the prophet, was the one who told Hezekiah that God had granted him fifteen more years and would confirm it by turning back the Shadow of the steps. There are a number of times when Isaiah speaks about God hiding His people in the ‘Shadow of His Hand’. That shows how close the Lord is to His people, His own hand protects us from trouble. The scriptures above also declare that God gives us His words to speak.
Freedom from human rules
16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come (symbolic); the reality, however, is found in Christ. Colossians 2
The New Testament/New Covenant reminds us that rule keeping ended when Christ came and went to the cross for us. Those things were also just a Shadow, not the real substance of God’s plan for mankind.
The law is only a Shadow of the good things that are coming – not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. Hebrews 10:1
The ‘good things’ are through faith in Christ. Our salvation and our destiny must depend on Jesus and His sacrifice.
A final New Testament reference to the topic of Shadows is an encouragement from the Book of James.
EVERY GOOD AND PERFECT GIFT IS FROM ABOVE, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, WHO DOES NOT CHANGE LIKE SHIFTING SHADOWS (God is always faithful). James 1:17
God only gives good gifts and there is no change in His goodness, contrasted with the shifting shadows, which are always moving.
