God wanted Blessings Spoken Over His People (not curses) and it occurred twice in their history, by Jacob and later Moses. Genesis 49, Deuteronomy 33
It was important in the purpose of God for Israel that their Patriarch blessed them and spoke over them before leaving the scene of time. Words do have power, both for good and unfortunately for evil.
The tongue has the power of life and death,
and those who love it will eat its fruit. Proverbs 18:21
Words kill, words give life;
they’re either poison or fruit—you choose. Prov. 18 MSG
Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, lost his place for intimacy with his father’s wife;
4 Turbulent as the waters, you will no longer excel,
Simeon and Levi were also demoted because of their anger,
Let me not enter their council,
let me not join their assembly,
Cursed be their anger, so fierce,
and their fury, so cruel! Genesis 49
(Levi’s future changed dramatically when they stood with Moses on the Lord’s side when Israel rebelled. Ex 32:26, 29)
Then we come to Judah (Hebrew – Praise); Judah the fourth born received the mantle of leadership and a powerful word concerning the distant coming of Messiah.
9 You are a lion’s cub, Judah;
you return from the prey, my son.
Like a lion he crouches and lies down,
like a lioness – who dares to rouse him?
10 The sceptre will not depart from Judah,
nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,
until he to whom it belongs shall come
and the obedience of the nations shall be his.
King David came from the tribe of Judah and Jesus Himself is known as the ‘Lion of Judah’. (I have shared before that every manhole cover on the streets of Jerusalem has an engraving of the Lion of Judah). Judah was already marked by God to be at the centre of His Plan to free the earth and it’s people from bondage and provide a bride for His Son.
22 ‘Joseph is a fruitful vine,
a fruitful vine near a spring,
Joseph, including Ephraim and Manasseh, was twice spoken of for fruitfulness (Ephraim means doubly fruitful).
24 But his bow remained steady,
his strong arms stayed supple,
because of the hand of the MIGHTY ONE OF JACOB,
because of the SHEPHERD, the ROCK OF ISRAEL,
25 because of your FATHER’S GOD, who helps you,
because of the ALMIGHTY, who BLESSES you
with BLESSINGS of the skies above,
BLESSINGS of the deep springs below,
BLESSINGS of the breast and womb.
26 Your father’s BLESSINGS are greater
than the BLESSINGS of the ancient mountains,
than the bounty of the age-old hills.
Let all these rest on the head of Joseph,
on the brow of the prince among his brothers.
Joseph, the governor of all Egypt, was marked by the Blessings of God throughout his life. May we know the Blessings of our God on our lives today and may we too bless and not curse. In Jacob’s early life his name was twister or schemer, but through God’s dealings he became a Blesser.
